Augmental, a company based in San Francisco, has officially launched its innovative tongue-controlled interface, the MouthPad, for public purchase across the United States. Following a successful early access period in 2024, this groundbreaking hands-free device is now widely available. Initially highlighted by designboom three years ago as an experimental concept, the MouthPad has already proven its value among over a hundred users facing mobility limitations, including students, artists, gamers, and various professionals. Some dedicated users report wearing the device for up to 16 hours daily, demonstrating a significant commitment to this unique method of computer interaction that rests comfortably in the roof of the mouth.
Crafted to fit each user precisely, the MouthPad resembles a slender dental retainer that comfortably secures over the upper teeth. This ingenious device incorporates a pressure-sensitive trackpad, strategically positioned to register tongue movements, alongside integrated motion sensors that interpret head gestures into precise cursor commands. This allows users to perform various digital actions such as clicking, scrolling, swiping, and dragging, with an added sipping motion providing an extra layer of input. The device seamlessly connects via Bluetooth to smartphones, tablets, and computers, effectively transforming the mouth—typically used for speech and eating—into a versatile programmable control surface. Furthermore, Augmental has introduced VOX, a wearable microphone pendant, dubbed an 'invisible keyboard.' Inspired by the stethoscope, VOX captures sound both through the air and the wearer's body, effectively filtering out background noise. This enables users to dictate quietly in environments where normal speech might be intrusive, such as libraries or busy cafes. VOX only records when intentionally activated by pressing the pendant or, when paired with the MouthPad, by a specific tongue gesture. This deliberate activation prevents constant listening, empowering users to compose messages, record thoughts, or engage with artificial intelligence on the go. Together, the MouthPad and VOX constitute what Augmental terms Skinware: body-integrated interfaces designed to replace conventional mice and keyboards, eliminating the need for a desk, hands, and eventually, much audible speech.
The second iteration of the MouthPad expands its functionality beyond a simple digital mouse, transforming it into a highly adaptable controller. Tongue gestures can now trigger keyboard shortcuts, and the pressure-sensitive trackpad can be reconfigured for WASD controls, catering to gaming, three-dimensional modeling, and other specialized applications. This enhanced version also supports simultaneous pairing with multiple devices, allowing users to switch between them with a physical button. Weighing approximately 10 grams, this dental-resin wearable delivers over seven hours of continuous battery life. Augmental has noted that more than 6,300 individuals, including surgeons, technicians, pianists, boxers, mechanics, and parents seeking hands-free digital control, have joined the waiting list. Tomás Baptista, a MouthPad user, recently achieved an impressive 10.47 bits per second in a cursor task assessing speed and accuracy. The company highlights this performance as comparable to advanced implanted brain-computer interfaces, emphasizing that the MouthPad offers similar precision control without the need for invasive surgical procedures.
