Realengo Park Market Square: A Community's Vision Realized in Rio de Janeiro
The genesis of Realengo Park's Market Square in Rio de Janeiro was not a formal blueprint but the dynamic interactions of its residents. Long before any architectural plans were drawn, this site was a hive of activity, characterized by makeshift stalls, spontaneous gatherings, music, playful children, and adults seeking refuge under temporary coverings. This vibrant, transient landscape inherently possessed a unique, informal architectural character, reflecting the community's needs and spirit.
It was against this rich backdrop that the vision for the Market Square began to take shape. The transformative project was brought to life through the collaborative efforts of Juliana Ayako, Carlos Zebulun, Helena Meirelles, Larissa Monteiro, Rodrigo Messina, and Francisco Rivas. Their work, recognized with an ArchDaily 2025 Next Practices Award, aimed to formalize and enhance this existing communal energy. The broader project management, including urban planning and landscape design, was expertly handled by Ecomimesis Soluções Ecológicas, the triumphant winner of a public competition hosted by the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro in 2023. This collective endeavor underscored a commitment to organic development and community integration, ensuring the new design resonated with the area's intrinsic vitality.
This innovative project serves as a powerful testament to the impact of thoughtful, community-responsive urban development. By acknowledging and building upon the inherent vitality of informal social spaces, architects and urban planners can create environments that genuinely serve their communities. The Realengo Park Market Square embodies the principle that true architectural success lies in enhancing human connection and supporting local culture, fostering a sense of belonging and collective ownership within the urban fabric. It reminds us that our built environments should always strive to uplift and empower the people who inhabit them, promoting inclusivity and dynamic public life.
