Swoop ADU: A Modern Housing Solution in Suburban New Jersey

Out of Line's 'Swoop ADU' project in South Orange, New Jersey, presents a forward-thinking approach to residential design, addressing the evolving needs of families seeking independent yet co-located living arrangements. This Accessory Dwelling Unit, featuring two bedrooms and a single bathroom, facilitates a harmonious multigenerational lifestyle within a shared property. The client's desire for a small, single-story home that was both affordable and tailored to her needs led to the development of Swoop ADU. Recognizing the potential of Accessory Dwelling Units, the client engaged Out of Line to transform her existing property. Danielle Kemble, co-founder of Out of Line Office, highlighted the client's objective to establish personal autonomy within this new residence while also embracing a design that was engaging and dynamic. The project's aesthetic draws inspiration from the horizontal division often seen in split-level homes, reinterpreting this familiar line into a fluid, expressive architectural feature that gracefully curves and sweeps across the new structure's exterior. This design choice visually links the new addition with the original property, simultaneously asserting its unique identity.

Inside the Swoop ADU, careful consideration has been given to the flow and functionality of space. A gable-shaped entrance, echoing prevalent roof forms in the vicinity, offers a welcoming and sheltered transition into the home. Upon entering, residents are greeted by a compact foyer that opens into a spacious 14-foot-tall living area, providing direct access to the backyard. The inclusion of a large picture window and a glass patio door ensures an abundance of natural light throughout the living space, fostering a strong connection with the surrounding garden.
