A Visionary Union: East Meets West in Design Aspirations

Andrew and Allison Jolley embarked on the refurbishment of their sprawling 7,000-square-foot Bluebird Ranch, nestled deep within Utah's rugged terrain, with distinct design inspirations. Having lived in coastal Queensland during the pandemic, Allison developed a profound appreciation for Australian design—its effortless elegance, emphasis on natural elements, vibrant color palettes, and luminous quality. She was particularly drawn to its whimsical and organic shapes. Andrew, conversely, envisioned a quintessential Western ranch. This blend of styles set the stage for an intriguing design challenge, beautifully executed by AD PRO Directory designer Susannah Holmberg.

The Desert's Guiding Hand: Transforming a 90s Canvas

As the renovation of their extensive 100-acre property progressed, the breathtaking desert environment gradually became the dominant force shaping the interior design. The original house featured rigid, dated interiors characterized by stark white tiles, prominent grout lines, and unadorned white walls—a typical 90s aesthetic. However, the expansive, raw beauty of the desert inspired the couple to opt for a warmer, more earthy and rooted design. Andrew reflected on this shift, noting, "As we started selecting materials and finishes, it became evident that the house and its surroundings were directing us toward a new path. Releasing our initial concept was a pivotal moment, opening the door to a design that was more site-specific, adventurous, and ultimately, more captivating."

Crafting Comfort: Integrating the Outdoors with Interior Warmth

From their elevated deck, the family is privy to spectacular views of desert thunderstorms sweeping across the ever-changing landscape—from the light rock formations near the residence to the iconic red hues of southern Utah farther afield. Holmberg describes the scenery with awe: "It's a sight that can bring tears to your eyes; the sheer vastness instills a sense of the planet's ancient history." This profound sense of scale was skillfully brought indoors. Holmberg's design philosophy aimed to balance the expansive outdoor environment with the need for cozy interior sanctuaries. She achieved this through rich wood paneling, textured plastered surfaces, bespoke tiling, layered rugs, unique vintage furniture, and deep, saturated colors, all working in harmony to soften the home's architecture. "There's a unique magic that happens when you move beyond standard drywall," she observes.

Overcoming Obstacles: The Remote Challenge of Renovation

The secluded location of the property presented numerous logistical hurdles, particularly in securing skilled subcontractors. Many initially struggled to grasp the nuanced design vision. Holmberg recalls the initial resistance: "Some believed that true 'good design' meant stark, modern interiors with white drywall—'Oh, that's contemporary, that's chic.' So, they questioned why we were reintroducing paneling. It felt like a scene from a B-movie!" she humorously recounts. "But ultimately, acting as the 'city slicker' and finding common ground proved to be incredibly rewarding."

Sanctuary of Serenity: The Master Suite's Collected Charm

In the primary bedroom, a lofty vaulted ceiling and walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Deep River create a serene canopy over a Chris Earle bed, notable for its handcrafted, multiwood-inlaid detailing. The bed is complemented by the owners' personal rug, a cherished find from Santa Fe. Throughout the room, Holmberg meticulously curated elements to evoke the same sense of a thoughtfully collected space that defines the entire home. She emphasized the importance of this approach, stating, "For this particular project, it was crucial to create a home that felt imbued with heart and soul, giving the impression that it had always existed."
