A Historic Roman Atelier Reborn with Contemporary Flair

Situated in Rome's vibrant Prati district, a neighborhood renowned for its artistic spirit, a distinguished apartment dating back to 1927 has undergone a stunning transformation. Originally conceived by architect Mario De Renzi, this space once served as the studio of an eminent Italian architect, a hub frequented by a multitude of painters and artists, earning it the local moniker, "the artists' condominium." In January 2023, designers Ludovica Malagò and Gaia Rebecchini of Studio Malià encountered the property, which had fallen into disuse but still possessed an undeniable allure. As Rebecchini recounts, "It left us speechless, even though it had been technically abandoned for years." The previous occupant, architect Cesare Rovatti, was so impressed by Studio Malià's vision for revitalization that he agreed to sell the atelier, recognizing their commitment to restoring it to its former glory as a sanctuary for artistic expression.

Upon entering the apartment, guests are now greeted by an unexpected burst of color: a spectacular sunburst mosaic, meticulously crafted with twelve distinct hues, instantly dispels the former gloom of the once-dark entryway. This vibrant mosaic was a deliberate choice by Malagò and Rebecchini, who recognized the need to infuse the space with light and energy. Throughout the renovation, the design duo made a conscious effort to honor the building's rich history.
